The Next Generation of Film
Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The New York Times

September - December 2006

Sponsored by MyRichUncle

Go behind the scenes this fall with award-winning filmmakers. It’s your exclusive chance to hear them discuss their work and their influences.

Ben Affleck
Wednesday, December 6, 7:00 p.m.
Ben Affleck snuck into the collective moviegoing consciousness in the early 90s, with his terrific performances in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused and Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy. He and his childhood friend Matt Damon burst into stardom in Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting, for which they shared a Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Affleck joins us in person for a screening of Hollywoodland and a wide-ranging discussion about acting, writing, career choices, surviving in the movie business, and whatever else comes to mind.

In Allen Coulter's Hollywoodland, Affleck gives what is by overwhelming consensus one of this year's finest performances as George Reeves, the swaggeringly affable yet poignantly hapless star of the Superman TV series. "In his generous spirit toward a forgotten icon," wrote Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, "Affleck turns the death-obsessed Hollywoodland into, of all things, a film about resurrection."

Paul Schrader
Sunday, October 22, 4:30 p.m.
A couple of years ago, Paul Schrader began writing a book that would not only lay out the key films and filmmakers in the history of the medium but also explain his criteria for standards of cinematic value. He chose not to complete it. The famed screenwriter-director (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and the upcoming The Walker) will examine his choices and the reasons behind them with FSLC programmer & Film Comment editor-at-large Kent Jones. Illustrated with film clips, it's bound to be an expressive, provocative & lively discussion. Even though Schrader chose not to complete the book, its introduction is available in the Sept/Oct issue of Film Comment magazine. Monte Hellman
Saturday, October 14, 5:00 p.m.
Unlike many other American filmmakers of his generation, Monte Hellman did not burst onto the scene; he arrived, quietly, with a uniquely powerful aesthetic that resembled no one else’s before or since. His films The Shooting, Two-Lane Blacktop and Cockfighter are among the most acclaimed ever made in this country. Hear him talk about his influences and formative experiences, and his ever-changing perspectives on cinema and life.

See six of cult auteur Monte Hellman's greatest films when BAMcinematek presents An Independent Spirit: Monte Hellman from Oct 12--17, including his masterpiece Two-Lane Blacktop and Ride in the Whirlwind (followed by a Q&A with Monte himself). Monte will also be on hand to discuss one of his favorite films, Carol Reed's Outcast of the Islands, on Oct 16.

Frederick Wiseman: On the Documentary Image
Sunday, September 17, 6:30 p.m.
At this point in film history, the documentary form has become more important and pervasive than ever. That makes this opportunity to hear the ground-breaking American documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman especially timely. Hear him share his thoughts on his work, and on the issues and implications of his films – from Titicut Follies to High School to The Garden – illustrated by selected film clips.
