November 14 will mark the centenary of Louise Brooks, one of the most dynamic and bewitching figures ever to step before a camera. The girl from Kansas quickly made her way from the chorus line of the Ziegfeld Follies to a short but indelible interval of international stardom in Hollywood, Germany and France, during which Brooks became the definitive icon of early 20th century modernity and sexuality.
To commemorate the birth of this screen legend, film historian Peter Cowie has written a perceptive and revealing portrait of the actress and the woman, with whom he formed an enduring friendship. We’ll be screening Diary of a Lost Girl, one of Brooks’ greatest films, introduced by Mr. Cowie, who will also be signing copies of his book "Lulu Forever."
