On October 9th, 1967, the revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara was killed by Bolivian soldiers. "Di Buen Día a Papá" is both the code phrase used to order Che's execution and the Spanish title of this fascinating film. Throughout four episodes that take place between 1967 and 1997, Say Good Morning to Dad interweaves the stories of love, conflict and reconciliation of three generations of women from Vallegrande, the little Bolivian town where Che Guevara was killed in 1967 and where his remains were found and unburied thirty years later.
From the hilarious unfolding of the Mayor of Valle- grande’s plans to touristically exploit “the route of Che,” and the subsequent threat of a government official to take away the bones of “Saint Che,” to accounts of mysterious anonymous letters ordering the women to comply with a command or be damned by “Che’s curse,” Say Good Morning to Dad goes from drama to comedy to parable spinning together the superstitions, town lore, local customs and history of Vallegrande since the death of Che Guevara and his burial in that small town.
Co-production: Bolivia/Argentina/Cuba
