Fired from the Moscow film studio, Vertov accepted an offer to go work in the Ukrainian film studio (VUFKU) in Kiev to make a film celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution. By the time he finished, the tenth anniversary celebrations were over — thus the title, The Eleventh Year. Many of the experiments with spatial and temporal dislocation seen in his later works make their first appearance in The Eleventh Year, a work of great beauty and emotional force.
Kino-Pravda No. 17 will not be shown as we were unable to get them out of Russia. We apologize for the inconvenience.

These selections from the initial year of his radical newsreel indicate many of Vertov's interests and inventiveness that led to The Man With the Movie Camera (1929) and Enthusiasm (1931). They begin with the projectionist unpacking and spooling up the reel we are "about" to see (a playful touch, and instructive to viewers unacquainted with the technology of the film medium). A split screen effect announces the dateline: Moscow. Dynamic intertitles accompany some specific subjects: reconstructing the trolley system, tanks leveling a new airport, organizing peasants’ communes, a new sanitarium, the horror of abandoned children. - Excerpted from MoMA film catalogue.
