Splendor in the Grass Series: Dziga and His Brothers: A Film Family on the Cutting Edge [Nov 17 - 26 2006] Director: Elia Kazan, Country: USA, Release: 1961, Runtime: 124 Boris Kaufman's third collaboration with Elia Kazan gave him a chance to show off his work with color, he already having been duly praised for his mastery of black and white. Making his screen debut, Warren Beatty plays Bud Stamper, a bright young man with a promising future ahead of him. He falls for Deanie Loomis (Natalie Wood) and wants to settle down and marry her, but his overbearing father Ace (Pat Hingle) will hear none of it; he’s got big plans for Bud that include sending him off to Yale before he takes over the family oil business. A kind of panhandle Romeo and Juliet, Splendor in the Grass in Kazan's hands becomes a look at the clash between a declining tradition and a new order not yet fully emerged or even understood. Beatty has a touching vulnerability, but it's really Wood who shines here, earning her third Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Screenwriter William Inge received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his work on Splendor.
