L'Atalante
Series: Dziga and His Brothers: A Film Family on the Cutting Edge [Nov 17 - 26 2006]
Director: Jean Vigo, Country: France, Release: 1934, Runtime: 89

"(L'Atalante) is a succession of extraordinary set pieces so exactly and delicately realized that the film gives the impression of having been improvised in a single, ecstatic spasm of inspiration." - Vincent Canby, New York Times

The prototype for independent cinema the world over, this sensuous hymn to liberation follows the ups and downs of a young married couple, a young barge captain (Jean Dasté) and a country girl (Dita Parlo). When their domestic quarters prove too confining, it takes first mate "Pere Jules" (the wonderful Michel Simon) to bring them back together. Boris Kaufman's fourth and, tragically, final collaboration with Vigo (he died soon after shooting was completed) finds him experimenting with the visual qualities created with sun, spray and the constant movement of the barge.
