Ruth Beckermann’s wry, often hilarious, and unexpectedly moving film looks at the build-up, the anxiety, the schmaltzy accoutrements and the overwhelming release that occur with every enactment of the great ceremony of Jewish life. As Beckermann (whose deceptively simple Jenseits des Krieges is one of the great Austrian films of the 90s) deftly works her way through the alternate scenarios enacted by four different families — from a simple Orthodox ceremony to the titular extravaganza, which appears to have a budget only slightly less grand than that of Titanic — she pieces together a fascinating mosaic of Jewish life in modern Europe. It’s hard to say who are the more commanding subjects — the kids or their anxious parents? Or, perhaps, it’s André, the videographer, whose reenactment of a few key moments from The Legend of Zorro makes the “Happy Bar Mitzvah, Bernie” section of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz look restrained.
