Probably the prime mover in Austrian cinema, Barbara Albert is a filmmaker of rare talent and power: few directors have been better at depicting the inner lives of young women of limited means, as they grapple with an unforgiving and commerce-happy world. Before her three remarkable features (Northern Skirts, Free Radicals and the new Falling), Albert made a series of remarkable shorts.
Nachtschwalben is a quick, vivid look at female friendship, via an argument in the ladies’ room at a dance club. The Fruit of thy Womb journeys into the private world of a young girl confounded by the unfathomable world of adults. Somewhere Else is a series of portraits of four people who have endured the war in Sarajevo. Sunspots is the story of two women who work in an inn outside of the big city — “a strictly ‘feminine’ story from the area between tristesse and popular fantasy, beautifully acted, weightlessness transformed into movement, bodies, colors and emotions.” (Stefan Grissemann)
