Richard Linklater's adaptation of Phillip K. Dick's novel of drug-induced paranoia is a remarkable film in all ways -- first of all, it stays true to the spirit of its thorny, multi-faceted, moody source material; secondly, it is a remarkably complex and multi-layered narrative, which the filmmaker handles with his usual fludity and focus; thirdly, it features a terrific ensemble, led by Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey, Jr. and Winona Ryder, who have a keen understanding of the sad poignancy built into their source material; and lastly, Linklater's vision is realized in animated imagery (like his earlier Waking Life) that gives the strange, unstable, paranoiac world of his characters texture and dimension.
