Independents Night: New Muslim Cool
Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

Director Jennifer Taylor on-stage to answer questions after the film and join the audience at a post-screening reception.

Ten years ago, Jason Pérez, raised Roman Catholic by his Puerto Rican parents, was dealing drugs without much hope of a different life. But a chance encounter with a sheikh transformed his life. He took the name Hamza, gave up drugs, and converted to Islam. Not content with these changes, Hamza has formed a community of Latino and African-American Muslims that attempts to reconcile their heritage with their new faith. And with his brother Suliman, Hamza has formed the rap group Mujahideen Team, putting their religious message in a very real context. Director Jennifer Maytorena Taylor, who has often explored the connection between the personal and the socio-political within Latino themes and content, creates more than another hip-hop fusion story. New Muslim Cool is a coming-of-age tale for our multi-cultural world.

Co-presented with the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival and P.O.V.
