Independents Night: Ice People
Thursday,October 16, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Anne Aghion and leading Antarctic scientist Prof. Allan Ashworth will introduce the film and answer questions after the screening. A reception will follow in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery.

The public focus on climate change has turned the shores of Antarctica into a tourist mecca, but inland, away from the penguins and ice floes, is a magical landscape of volcanoes, boulder-strewn valleys and ominous glaciers. Only a small number of research teams make it there, braving severe conditions to learn about our planet’s history and make predictions about its future. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Anne Aghion spent four months on the ice with scientists Allan Ashworth and Adam Lewis. Covering hundreds of miles, they searched for tiny yet critical signs of life from 20 million years ago. Discover what drives dedicated researchers to leave ease and comfort behind in the pursuit of science, and experience the stillness and excitement that abounds on the southern tip of the world.
