WBAI’s Armand DiMele and the New Yorker's Pete Hamill, both of whom participated in the film, will also be on hand to talk about it. A joint program of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and IFP. Every once in a while and whether they admit it or not, New Yorkers ask themselves why they live in this city: why they chose it, what makes it so unique, and how much longer they can continue to thrive here. Framed through the eyes of a recently arrived Dubliner as he wrestles with the concept of home, nostalgia and journey, Dawn Scibilia’s first feature is an impeccably shot love letter to the greatest city in the world. Home features effusive comments from many old and new New Yorkers, as well as the quintessential ones: Woody Allen, Pete Hamill, Fran Lebowitz, Frank McCourt, Rosie Perez, Liam Neeson, Colin Quinn, Elaine Kaufman, and Susan Sarandon. David Amram, Armand DiMele, Malachy McCourt, Alfred Molina, Mike Myers, and Drew Nieporent also share their experiences. As natives and immigrants discuss what brings them here and makes them stay, Home give us glimpses of familiar images that never looked so enticing, stunning and saturated — rain on the sidewalk reflecting neon, silhouettes of children playing with a broken water hydrant. It’s a lyrical, even romantic, vision of the city that many of us already think of as — and others someday hope to call — home. Independents Night is devoted exclusively to showcasing New York premieres of American documentaries. This rich genre comes to the big screen every other month at the Walter Reade Theater, making it one of the city’s foremost venues for nonfiction work.
