underEXPOSED: Black Women Photographers in America

The Film Society celebrates Black History Month by hosting this traveling photography exhibition dedicated to the works of black women photographers in America. The exhibition showcases their vision of the world, as captured through the camera lens while working in a field that has not often featured their work. The Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery, open daily 1 - 8, is adjacent to the Walter Reade Theater.
Nonconformutopia, 2005

On the subject of nonconformity, this piece contains text quotations from Carolyn Krause, Robert Marritz, Yvonne Rudman, Sunny Speidel, and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.
Dee Dee Does Utopia is a new series of meticulously crafted collages that explore popular concepts of the sublime. For this project, artist Deborah F. Lawrence combined images and texts to illuminate results of a survey she conducted following the 2004 Presidential election. With the support of a prestigious grant from Creative Capital Foundation, NY, Lawrence has completed a series of 22 collage-based works on paper, board, and recycled tin serving trays.

The extremely crowded shoreline the artist was compelled to depict because of the number of people who have included the beach in descriptions of Utopia. Contains text quotations from Thomas More, Lois Derry, Pam Keeley, Scott Schafer, and Janice Queener Shaw.
In November, 2004, the Seattle-based artist sent a mass e-mail posing the question, “What does Utopia look like to you?” Prompted by her own dismay at the results of the recent presidential elections, Ms. Lawrence sent her question to a diverse group, including teaching colleagues, students, fellow artists, writers, strangers, feminists and a peace activists’ group. "I asked for visual and physical descriptions of what people envisioned as the 'ideal' world," Lawrence says. To date, she has received over 17,500 words in response. The top contenders for utopia? Beloved pets, beach scenes, and impeachment scenarios.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center presents curated exhibits in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater that either compliment the programming or are film related art shows. Inaugurated in 1991, the space was designed by prestigious architectural firm Davis Brody and named in honor of the Furmans, longtime supporters of the Film Society.
