FSLC announces 12th Edition of FILM COMMENT SELECTS,  February 17-March 1

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced the schedule for the 12th edition of FILM COMMENT SELECTS (February 17-March 1), Film Comment magazine’s essential and eclectic film festival. Featuring a handpicked lineup of films that are alternately previewing prior to their theatrical runs or quite possibly never coming back to the big screen—the rare and the rediscovered, the unclassifiable and the underrated—the 32 film schedule will include several appearances by filmmakers and cast, including Eric Atlan, Sara Driver, James Franco, Jim Hoberman, Kerri Kenney, Kenneth Lonergan, Joshua Marston, Paul Rudd, and David Wain.

Lesli Klainberg and Anne Chaisson join the Film Society of Lincoln Center

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today that Lesli Klainberg and Anne Chaisson have joined the organization. Klainberg has assumed the role of Managing Director and Chaisson is now Associate Director of Corporate Sponsorships. Commenting on Klainberg and Chaisson joining FSLC executive director Rose Kuo said, "Lesli and Ann are both experienced, talented and creative leaders in the film community and I look forward to working with them to expand our mission, look for new opportunities and to continue the Film Society's support of artists from around the world."

FSLC and MoMA Announce Seven Official Selections for the 41st edition of New Directors/New Films

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art announced seven official selections for the 2012 New Directors/New Films Festival (March 21–April 1). Dedicated to the discovery of new works by emerging and dynamic filmmaking talent, the 2012 edition marks the film festival’s 41st year. Representing seven countries from around the world, the initial seven selections are Karl Markovics’ BREATHING (Austria), Anca Damian’s CRULIC: THE PATH TO BEYOND (Romania), Julia Murat’s FOUND MEMORIES (Brazil), Pablo Giorgelli’s LAS ACACIAS (Argentina), Joachim Trier’s OSLO, AUGUST 31ST (Norway), Alejandro Landes’s PORFIRIO (Colombia) and Angelina Nikonova’s TWILIGHT PORTRAIT (Russia).

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced details today for the upcoming film series, Cinematic Goddess: American Sex Symbol, The Films of Raquel Welch (February 10-14). Screening at the Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street), and highlighted by the attendance of Welch at several screenings, the film series includes such notable classics as 100 RIFLES (1969), HANNIE CAULDER (1972), KANSAS CITY BOMBER (1972), MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1967), as well as THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1974), featuring her Golden Globe winning performance.

Béla Tarr’s final film, The Turin Horse, opens on Fri, February 10

THE TURIN HORSE is the final statement from a master filmmaker. Bela Tarr’s film continues the tradition of immaculate photography with renowned long takes and was selected as Hungary’s official submission for this year’s Academy Awards, awarded the Silver Bear and FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 2011 and official selection at the New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival. The Turin Horse will be released by Cinema Guild on Friday February 10th at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center.

FSLC announces Catherine Deneuve as recipient of the 39th annual Chaplin Award

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that Academy Award-nominee Catherine Deneuve will be honored at the 39th Annual Chaplin Award Gala held in Alice Tully Hall on the evening of Monday, April 2, 2012. The event will be attended by a host of notable guests and celebrities honoring the international film legend’s groundbreaking career and will feature film and interview clips culminating in the presentation of The Chaplin Award.

FSLC announces January and February 2012 lineup for 50 Years of the NYFF

The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s year-long countdown to the New York Film Festival’s historic 50th edition continues through January and February, offering the rare opportunity to view several undisputed classics of the big screen, many of which were introduced to the world at NYFF. These include breakthrough films of Jonathan Demme and Errol Morris, and Oscar-nominated classics from François Truffaut and Andrzej Wajda. Appearances by Jonathan Demme and actor Paul Le Mat announced.

Film Comment 2011 Best of Year Lists

Film Comment‘s annual end-of-the-year survey of notable film critics, journalists, film section editors, and past and present contributors was released today with Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES and Lars von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA taking the top spots among films released in 2011. Among films that made appearances at film festivals or special screenings worldwide, but haven’t received stateside distribution as of yet, Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb’s THIS IS NOT A FILM, Béla Tarr’s THE TURIN HORSE and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA received the top rankings.

FSLC to host a complete Béla Tarr retrospective with TURIN HORSE to open theatrically

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will host a complete Béla Tarr retrospective titled The Last Modernist: The Complete Works of Béla Tarr from February 3-8, 2012. In advance of the U.S. Theatrical Premiere of The Turin Horse on February 10th, the Film Society will present a rare “complete” retrospective of a living filmmaker, stretching from his early cinema verité portraits of proletariat life in Communist-era Hungary to the hypnotic, career-defining masterworks that cemented Tarr’s international reputation.

The 21st Annual New York Jewish Film Festival presented by FSLC and The Jewish Museum Jan 11-26

The Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center will present the 21st annual New York Jewish Film Festival at the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater and Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, Jan. 11-26, 2012. The festival’s 35 features and shorts from 11 countries - 28 screening in their world, U.S. or New York premieres - provide a diverse global perspective on the Jewish experience.
