A native Georgian living and working in France since 1982, Otar Iosseliani has created one of the most distinctive cinemas found anywhere today. Perhaps the truest heir of Jacques Tati, Iosseliani’s mise-en-scene is often more akin to choreography than direction, with complex movements of people, animals and objects through eccentric spaces—often with hilarious results. Director Julie Bertucelli, his assistant on several films, offers a fascinating look at Iosseliani’s working methods and unique conception of the cinema.
