NYFF Video: Alexander Payne “On Cinema”

On the second-to-last day of the 49th New York Film Festival, director Alexander Payne sat down with NYFF Program Director Richard Peña for the latest in our annual "On Cinema" series, sponsored by HBO Films, which has previously seen conversations with Pedro Almodóvar and Olivier Assayas. Payne showed the audience clips from a selection of his favorite films—a guided tour, of sorts, of the cinema that has inspired his filmmaking. His choices included Anthony Mann's The Naked Spur, Michelangelo Antonioni's La Notte, Martin Scorsese's Casino, Akira Kurosawa's Red Beard, as well as Carroll Ballard's rarely seen 16mm Perils of Priscilla, a short film shot from a cat's point of view. You can watch this fascinating discussion in its entirety below, and for more video content from this year's festival check out our Youtube playlist!
