Underworld
Series: The 45th New York Film Festival [Sep 28 - Oct 14 2007]
Director: Josef von Sternberg, Country: USA, Release: 1927, Runtime: 80

Underworld originally opened in one tiny New York theater, only to gather audience momentum and become one of the biggest films of 1927, establishing the career of its director Josef von Sternberg and laying down a virtual template for the gangster genre. Yet this is also a Sternberg love triangle, between gang boss Bull Weed (George Bancroft), his girl Feathers (Evelyn Brent), and his trusted friend and advisor Rolls Royce (Clive Brook) – a film of the most delicate looks, gestures, and flutters of emotion, artfully modulated and exquisitely photographed. Underworld will be shown in a brand new print, and the Alloy Orchestra will perform the world premiere of their new score.
