Film Criticism in Crisis? A panel discussion hosted by Film Comment
Sponsored by Sardinia Region Tourism.
At the turn of the millennium, the burning topic in film culture circles was the oft-proclaimed “Death of Cinema.” Nearly ten years later movies continue to thrive and mutate—but for cinephiles now, as serious writing and movie reviewing are becoming seemingly endangered species, a new question looms: Are we now facing the Death of Film Criticism—or its rebirth?
This panel, organized by Film Comment magazine and moderated by its editor Gavin Smith, brings together critics from around the world and close to home to discuss the current state and future of criticism. Confirmed participants include Jonathan Rosenbaum, Cahiers du cinéma editor Emmanuel Burdeau, Film Comment's Editor-at-Large Kent Jones, GreenCine Daily editor David Hudson, O Magazine film critic Jessica Winter, Pascual Espiritu aka Acquarello of Strictly Film School, and Seung-hoon Jeong, former critic for Korean film weekly Cine 21, now in
Yale's PhD program.
