Jia Zhangke’s new documentary continually re-defines itself as it proceeds, from modern clothing factories to designer shops to a Parisian fashion installation of the work of vanguard designer Ma Ke, to Northern Chinese mining country and the testaments of local tailors, keenly aware of their own expendable role in a world of mass-produced goods. Useless is not an illustration of a thesis, but a work of exploration - a conversation between Jia and the modern world, which begins by examining what we wear and ends by addressing who we are, with the greatest eloquence.
