The 6th Romanian Film Festival organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York sports a new look for its first showing at Lincoln Center, displaying an impressive array of recent features (including several NY premieres), while also highlighting the outstanding careers of two masters through complete retrospectives: veteran Liviu Ciulei and Radu Muntean of Tuesday, After Christmas fame. The cult film that started it all for the Romanian New Wave, Cristi Puiu’s Stuff and Dough, prompts a special 10-year anniversary screening.

Liviu Ciulei Retrospective
An internationally renowned actor and stage director (including five years as artistic director of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis), the late Liviu Ciulei (1923-2011) was also the director of three intensely cinematic feature films from Romania’s first “new wave” of internationally acclaimed filmmakers. We are pleased to present the first complete U.S. retrospective of Ciulei’s rarely screened films, in the presence of actress Irina Petrescu, star of The Danube Waves.

Radu Muntean Retrospective
A key figure in the new Romanian cinema, director Radu Muntean first drew international acclaim for his masterful Romanian Revolution drama The Paper Will Be Blue, before becoming one of the toasts of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival for his searing marital drama, Tuesday, After Christmas. We are pleased to welcome Muntean for the first complete U.S. retrospective of his remarkable body of work, including the world premiere of his new HBO documentary, Visiting Room.
