What Love May Bring
Ces amours-là | Claude Lelouch, 2010
France | French | 120 minutes

Described by its director as “a remake of my 41 films,” What Love May Bring is an inimitable Claude Lelouch romantic epic, spanning several decades in the life of Ilva (Audrey Dana, the great discovery of Lelouch’s previous Roman de Gare), for whom love holds a place above all else. As she flashes back over the men she has known and to whom she has given her heart, we are transported alongside her to France during and between two world wars, to affairs with countrymen and enemies alike, and a life that coincides with many of the touchstones of 20th century history. It’s hardly coincidence that Ilva works as a cinema usherette, for What Love May Bring is also an illustrated journey through many places—and faces—remembered from Lelouch films past, including “cameo” appearances by the likes of Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jacques Brel, Lino Ventura and many, many more.
