"Everything is in movement—immobility doesn’t exist." So went the credo of Jean Tinguely, one of the most popular, and influential, sculptors of the 20th century. Tinguely’s vast creations, full of mesh and wire, whirring wheels and clanging metal, were both products and reflections of consumer society; a few of them were actually designed to destroy themselves when you turned them on. This long-overdue portrait of Tinguely traces his development from his boyhood in Switzerland to his crucial stay in Paris in the early 1950s, as well as his encounters with surrealism, pop art and arte povera.
