The Wizard of Oz
Victor Fleming, 1939
USA | Format: 35mm Sing Along version/ DCP Regular version | 100 minutes

Movies for Kids: Sing-along version on July 30! (Regular version on August 3.)

“There’s an audience for Oz wherever there’s a projection machine and a screen”—Variety

The Wizard of Oz was defined as the cornerstone of Garland’s “eternal fame” by The National Observer in the late 1960s. Now, more than 40 years later, her characterization is arguably the single most identifiable actor/role combination in motion picture history.

“Dorothy Gale” travels over the rainbow—via Metro’s whole-cloth, special effects tornado—to revel in Technicolor; to enjoy the Munchkins, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, and Good Witch; to combat the Winged Monkeys, Winkies, and Wicked Witch; and to discover the truths about The Wizard of Oz—and herself. Academy Award winner for Best Song (“Over the Rainbow”) and Best Original Score (Herbert Stothart), plus a special juvenile Oscar for Garland. She later dubbed the miniature statuette “The Munchkin Award.” Co-starring, for the record: Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charley Grapewin, Clara Blandick, Pat Walshe, Mitchell Lewis, The Singer Midgets, and “Terry.”

The sing-along version screening on July 30 is co-presented by NewFest.
