The Home and the World
Ghare Baire | Satyajit Ray, 1984
India | 140 minutes

When a liberal, British-educated Bengali landlord introduces his more traditional wife to a radical friend (Ray regular Soumitra Chatterjee), she is consumed by new passions, political and personal. Adapted from a Tagore novel that Ray had long dreamed of filming—he first attempted a script in the 1940s—this intimate, historically perceptive drama plots one woman’s growing sense of independence against the burgeoning Bengali nationalist movement of the early 20th century. Starring Soumitra and Swatilekha Chatterjee. Print courtesy of the Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection at the Academy Film Archive.
