Suspense
Frank Tuttle , 1946
USA | 101 minutes

A retrospective screening of this rarely-seen film noir compliments Dance on Camera’s first foray into the arena of ice dancing. The film stars glamorous English ice skater Belita, whose exciting skating style comes alive on screen. The plot centers on an out-of-work drifter (Barry Sullivan) who meets the proprietor of an ice skating review (Albert Dekker) and gets hired as an all-round factotum. He is set on a course of advancement when he suggests ideas to improve the act of the show’s star Roberta Elva (Belita), who is also the boss’s wife. But when Dekker begins to suspect that his new manager is overly ambitious and may have romantic designs on his wife, he decides to take revenge. Tuttle was a successful studio genre director until the House Un-American Activities Committee called him to testify and he named names. His most famous film was This Gun for Hire starring Alan Ladd. Suspense is also the final film of beloved character actor Eugene Pallette.
