Presenting Lily Mars
Norman Taurog, 1943
USA | Format: 35mm | 104 minutes

“Rating: Excellent. Brilliant entertainment with lilting music, a charming love interest, and Garland and Heflin supported by a nearly flawless cast”
Motion Picture Herald

An Indiana girl makes good on Broadway, but only after an interesting plot twist that sees her unable to replace a temperamental leading lady on opening night. Marta Eggerth, Richard Carlson, Fay Bainter, Spring Byington, and Connie Gilchrist shine—and the orchestras of Bob Crosby and Tommy Dorsey effectively swing out.

If not a major film achievement, it’s perhaps all the more enjoyable for its unfamiliarity and low-key flashes of reality. “Broadway Rhythm,” “Every Little Movement,” and “When I Look at You” highlight Judy’s seven songs. And she never looked better.

Series: Judy Garland: All Singin’, All Dancin’, All Judy

Venue: Walter Reade Theater
