Nights of Cabiria
Le notti di Cabiria | Federico Fellini, 1957
Italy/France | Format: 35mm | 117min minutes

The inspiration for the musical Sweet Charity, this chronicle of a naïve street walker for whom life is an adventure and daily trial is one of Fellini’s masterpieces. Nights of Cabiria combines humor and heartbreak in equal measure as it follows its titular protagonist on her journey to make a better life for herself, even as she is constantly betrayed by her inherently trusting nature. Fellini’s wife, the great Giulietta Masina, won Best Actress at Cannes for her heartbreaking portrayal of the ever-hopeful Cabiria, while the film won Fellini his second Best Foreign Film Oscar in a row, following La Strada. A young Pier Paolo Passolini contributed to the screenplay. Presented here in the glorious 1997 restoration that reinstated the seven-minute “Man with a Sack” sequence cut by producer Dino De Laurentiis (who believed it slowed the film down) following the Cannes premiere.
