Murder in the Oratory
Murder in the Oratory
Fei Mu, 1937
China | 98 minutes
Family ties are tested when a man is urged by his mother to kill his own wife, who is the daughter of his father’s killer. Drawing on the popular cultural reservoir of Beijing opera, Fei deftly merges the operatic and the filmic in this experimental blend of naturalism and formalism, crossing the stylized flair and song of opera with the expressive camera possibilities of film (including point-of-view camera angles and movement). Starring opera great Zhou Xinfang.
