“An extremely pleasant—winsome would be a better word—picture...natural, pleasant, and sensible”
—The New York Times
The most lightweight of all Judy’s screen vehicles, Listen, Darling is strengthened by her three songs (including “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart”) and the young and old-pro support provided by her costars. Mary Astor is the widow who is “kidnapped” by her daughter (Garland, in cahoots with buddy Freddie Bartholomew) to prevent her from seeking family financial stability in a dull re-marriage. Walter Pidgeon is the more likely suitor they encounter during a road trip.
Stalwarts Charley Grapewin, Alan Hale, Gene Lockhart, and Barnett Parker offer their standard (and genuinely welcome) characterizations.
