HBO Directors Dialogues: Ang Lee
Ang Lee,

One of the most versatile artists at work in world cinema today, Ang Lee has brought his lyrical and humanistic storytelling sensibility to a broad array of projects both in Hollywood and his native Taiwan, from his breakthrough marital comedy The Wedding Banquet to the Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain. In between, he has seemed equally at home immersing himself in the worlds of Jane Austen (for Sense and Sensibility), Marvel Comics (for The Hulk), the American Civil War (for Ride with the Devil) and 1970s suburban Connecticut (for The Ice Storm). Collectively, his 12 feature films to date have earned an extraordinary 8 Academy Awards (including Best Director for Brokeback Mountain) and 27 nominations, a tally surely to be increased by his film version of the Man Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi, the Opening Night Gala of the 50th NYFF. Lee will join The Hollywood Reporter’s Chief Film Critic and NYFF selection committee member Todd McCarthy for this wide-ranging discussion of his remarkable career.
