Fiddler on the Roof
Norman Jewison, 1971
USA | Format: Digital Projection | 181 minutes

Q&A with Norman Jewison and lyricist Sheldon Harnick!

Adapting the classic saga to film, Jewison met the challenge of the massively popular Broadway version with a fresh cast and Yugoslavia locations for the shtetl. Broad-shouldered and full of heart, Topol plays the put-upon Jewish father whose daughters have their eyes on marriage, in an early 20th-century moment of changing traditions. Scenes were famously shot through nylon for an Old World look, while John Williams won an Oscar for a score that features fiddling by Isaac Stern.
