Face to Face
Ansikte mot ansikte | Ingmar Bergman, 1975
Sweden | 136 minutes

An underseen Bergman film. Liv Ullmann is front and center as a disturbed psychiatrist who has an affair with a fellow doctor (Erland Josephson) while her husband is attending a conference in the U.S. (with his lover), only to succumb to a nervous breakdown seemingly triggered by haunting memories from her past. Originally made as a four-part miniseries for Swedish television, Face to Face represents the midpoint in a cycle of psychodramas that began with Cries and Whispers and concludes with Autumn Sonata. As such it expresses Bergman’s views about the limitations of psychiatry and his skepticism about what can be termed a “normal” state of mind. Nominated for Best Actress and Best Director at the 1977 Academy Awards.
