Death Is a Caress
Døden er et kjærtegn | Edith Carlmar, 1949
Norway | 92 minutes

In person: Ingrid Dokka, a Norwegian film scholar who has written extensively on Edith Carlmar. Discussion following the 6:45pm screening on Friday, April 29.

In this offbeat, fascinating film noir—apparently Norway’s first—wealthy socialite Sonja meets handsome, muscular mechanic Erik when she drops off her car for repairs. Instantly attracted to each other, they eventually break off other relationships to be together and marry—which is when the real problems begin. Few films have more effectively conveyed a kind of “male hysteria,” as Erik comes to regard his wife increasingly as an enigma whom he can’t control or understand.
