Ben Affleck, 2012
USA | 120 minutes
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ben Affleck is unable to travel to New York as originally planned. He will still participate in an extended conversation following the screening of Argo via Skype.
Widely tipped as a frontrunner for this year’s Oscars, Argo chronicles the stranger-than-fiction tale of a real-life covert operation to rescue six Americans from the thick of the Iran hostage crisis. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six American Embassy workers manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez (Affleck), to come up with a plan to get the Americans safely out of the country. His big idea? Pose as a Hollywood film crew looking to make a Star Wars-esque sci-fi epic on location in Tehran. A politically savvy caper picture decked out in fastidious 1970s production design and lots of love for the magic of the movies, Argo suggests a cross between François Truffaut’s Day For Night and Costa-Gavras’ Z, expertly directed by Affleck from a superb script (by Chris Terrio), and featuring a terrific ensemble cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Oscar winner Alan Arkin, and John Goodman.
