With just a handful of features, Joseph Cedar has established himself as one of the most important filmmaking voices in contemporary Israel. Born in New York, his family moved to Israel as a child, and he returned to New York as an adult to study film. His first two films, Time of Favor (2000) and Campfire (2004), both won best picture at the Ophir (Israeli) Academy Awards. His third feature, Beaufort (2007), about the final months before Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, earned international acclaim, with a best director award at the Berlin International Film Festival and an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film. Footnote (2011) won the best screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival.
