Jonathan Dayton was born in Alameda County, California, in 1957; Valerie Faris, his wife, was born in Los Angeles in 1958. The two met as students at UCLA while studying film. The two did not direct their first feature together until 2006, but were well-established music-video directors before then. Going back to 1982, Dayton and Faris directed videos for musical artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Little Miss Sunshine, their feature directorial debut, was one of the first “Cinderella Stories” of the American cinema in the 21st century. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to universal acclaim and went on to become a runaway hit, both commercially and critically after it won two Academy Awards. Despite such an announced arrival into the filmmaking world, the duo didn’t direct another feature for six years until 2012, when they returned with Ruby Sparks, starring Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan.
