Born Jean-Pierre Grumbach, French writer-director Jean-Pierre Melville, changed his name in 1940 to flee the Nazis and aid the French Resistance as part of the Free French Forces. In his short career he directed Bob le Flambeur (Bob the Gambler) (1956), Le Samouraï (1967), L’armée des ombres (Army of Shadows) (1969) and Le circle rouge (1970). In 2008, Code Name Melville, a documentary about Melville’s work in the French Resistance was released.
