Hayao Miyazaki

Born Jan 5, 1941. From Bunkyō, Tokyo, Japan.

Though he has only become famous in the west relatively recently, Hayao Miyazaki has had a long and influential career in his native Japan. He went into retirement in 1997 after the release of Princess Mononoke, which smashed box office records in Japan and won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture. He has since become a world-wide celebrity and come out of retirement many times over. Spirited Away surpassed the records set by Princess Mononoke, earned Miyazaki another best picture trophy, and became the first anime film to win an Oscar.
