Sir David Lean was an English director, producer and screenwriter with a perfectionistic drive. He is best known for his epics Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), but his work hardly stops or starts there. He also directed Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948) and Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter (1945). Lean was voted ninth greatest film director of all-time by the British FIlm Institute Sight & Sound’s 2002 best director’s poll. Lean passed away in April 1991 at the age of 83.
