HBO Films production American Splendor, a scruffy-charming distillation of Harvey Pekar's autobiographical comic books, is yet another example of the convergence between indie-auteur hipness and cable-ready conventionality, their mutual appetite for buzz and prestige eating away from opposite ends toward a boxed-in aesthetic.
