Woody Allen's new film, a romantic comedy that was filmed in Paris, will open the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. On May 11th, the same day that the new movie opens in theaters across France, the film will usher in the 64th edition of the Festival de Cannes.

Midnight in Paris, Allen's 41st feature film, stars Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard. It also features Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Gad Elmaleh, Léa Seydoux and France's first lady Carly Bruni-Sarkozy.

Cannes Festival director Thierry Frémaux called Woody Allen's new movie, "a wonderful love letter to Paris," in a statement, adding, "It's a film in which Woody Allen takes a deeper look at the issues raised in his last films: our relationship with history, art, pleasure and life."

With Woody Allen's film opening in some 400 theaters across France on May 11th, the festival and partner Canal+ will make the event's opening ceremony available to theaters around the country.

The 2001 Cannes Film Festival will run through May 22, 2011 in the South of France.
