Woody Allen’s Next Film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ Finds a Home

As Woody Allen’s summer hit Blue Jasmine, starring current Golden Globe and SAG award-nominee Cate Blanchett, continues its march to the Academy Awards (it had a special screening at last year’s New York Film Festival as part of a career tribute to its star), Sony Pictures Classics has announced North American distribution rights to Allen’s next venture, Magic in the Moonlight.

The announcement marks the seventh collaboration between Allen and the veteran distributor, a partnership which began in 1999 with the multiple Academy Award-nominated Sweet and Lowdown. Other highlights between the company and the filmmaker include Whatever Works, To Rome with Love and Midnight in Paris, a well received, time-traveling summer hit which netted Allen his fourth Oscar.

As per usual, Magic in the Moonlight will feature a highly respected ensemble of actors both stateside and abroad. British thespians Colin Firth, Eileen Atkins and Simon McBurney co-star alongside American heavy-hitters Marcia Gay Harden, Emma Stone and Hamlish Linklater (Austrailia’s own Jackie Weaver is also included in the festivities).

The film is described by the company as "a romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle.  Personal and professional complications ensue. The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Côte d’Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age.”

Although a release date has yet to be set, Allen’s films have recently found box office success in the warm months of summer. Expect this trend to very likely continue with this year’s Magic in the Moonlight.
