Cate Blanchett will be honored at a Gala Tribute tonight at the Alice Tully Hall

It's another exciting day at NYFF chock full of high profile guests and critically acclaimed films! Kicking off today’s program at 1:00pm is French director Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake, for which he won a director’s award at the Cannes Film Festival. The intriguing relationship between two men in a summer cruising spot is explored through explicit sex-scenes and a thriller-like storyline. Time Out New York described it as a “mesmerizing mix of explicit same-sex ethnography and old-school Hitchcockian suspense,” while The Hollywood Reporter writes that “Alain Guiraudie delivers a dark and, at times, absorbing contemplation on love, sex, desire and murder with the minimalist homoerotic drama”.

Also screening in the Main Slate today at 3:30pm is Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P.: Psychotherapy of a Blackfoot Indian, in which Benicio del Toro plays a Native American WWII veteran who strikes up a curious relationship with a Hungarian Jewish therapist. Like Father, Like Son at 6:00pm, by Hirokazu Kore-eda explores the Nature-vs.-Nurture debate through the touching story of two children exchanged at birth. Jia Zhangke’s A Touch of Sin won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and will be screening at 8:30pm. Both the director and star Zhao Tao will be present for a Q&A!

Two big names in cinema will be gracing the New York Film Festival with their presence today. At 8:30pm, NYFF will fete Cate Blanchett with a Gala Tribute. The event comprises clips and an intimate discussion with the Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actress, who will discuss her many wonderful and emblematic performances in films such as Elizabeth (1998), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), the recent Blue Jasmine (2013)  by Woody Allen, and her Oscar-winning role as Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator (2004). Even better, we've just confirmed a screening of Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine as part of the event!

Shortly before the Gala Tribute, at 6:15pm, Richard Curtis will be the guest of today’s HBO Directors Dialogues. With some very successful writing credits under his belt, including The Black Adder, Mr. Bean, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’ Diary and Notting Hill, Curtis moved on to direct Love Actually in 2003, which became one of the most beloved comedies of all times. Curtis will be discussing his career and his other films, Pirate Radio and About Time, which is screening in the Official Selection at NYFF.

If that's not enough chatter for you, at 7:00pm French heartthrob Louis Garrel will participate a free and open to the public NYFF Live Talk at the Film Center Amphitheater in which he will discuss his role in his father Philippe Garrel's new film Jealousy. Unfortunately, due to problems with Garrel's travel, this event has been canceled. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Fernando Eimbcke's Lake Tahoe

Today also brings several great rush ticket opportunities! At 6:00pm, a restoration of Lino Brocka’s 1975 film Manila in the Claws of Light is screening in our Revivals section. This melodramatic love story set in the streets of Manila is one of the late Filipino director’s best features. Rush tickets are also available for the first two films by Emerging Artists’ director Fernando Eimbcke, who is going to be present at the screening along with producer Christian Valdelièvre. Lake Tahoe is about a young Mexican wandering in the streets of a small town and Duck Season is about a lazy afternoon turning into a gathering of very different people in one apartment.

Last but not least, doc fans will have their share of fun today with two films from the Applied Science section. Mark Levinson's Particle Fever was a success at the Sheffield Doc Fest and shows how intense and thrilling the life of quantum physicists can be. Ben Lewis’ Google and the World Brain will make you think about the power and the doubts that have arisen as a result of the search giant's project to digitize every book ever made.
