What was the most memorable day of shooting like?
Ironically we didn't shoot many days for the film but post production took many years so at one point I had to go shoot a short film in Ghana and I had to take my edit with me because I had to finish it for the Sundance deadline. One day I was in Cape Coast Ghana on the beach with my laptop, editing the film looking out at the Atlantic. Definitely made me feel like this would be the one.
If you could work with any artist alive, who would it be and why?
I'd say Janelle Monae, she is a universe of possibilities on to herself.
What would you be doing if you weren't making films?
I'm also a Musician and Performer in general so I'd probably just put more time into that. But if I wasn't an artist generally I'd be a linguist, I'm obsessed with being able to understand everyone.
From what types of art, other than film, do you draw inspiration?
Books, novels really. Tony Morrison, Louise Erdrich, William Faulkner and Roald Dahl really influence me.
Which parts of the filmmaking process do you enjoy the most? The least?
The acting is the most immediately enjoyable part, that and the music. The least is producing / directing it but the "people moving" aspect of producing is masochism at it's highest form.
