Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is the Warmest Color won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year, while Alain Guiraudie's Stranger By the Lake won a director award in the event's Un Certain Regard section. Film Society hosted a recent retrospective of Guiraudie's work and Stranger is currently playing as a first-run at Film Society.

Both Kechiche and Guiraudie are nominated for a Best Director César. Nominees in the Best Film category are mirrored in the Best Director category this year. Other films nominated for both awards include Albert Dupontel's 9 Month Stretch, Guillaume Gallienne's Me, Myself and Mum, Arnaud Desplechin's Jimmy P., Asghar Farhadi's The Past and Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur, according to Indiewire.
