EYES WIDE SHUT
(Stanley Kubrick, USA, 1999; 159m)
As was the case with most of Stanley Kubrick’s films, EYES WIDE SHUT was
almost universally misunderstood at the time of its initial release, six
months after the director’s death in the summer of 1999. Kubrick’s
adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s novella A Dream Story is a mesmerizing
exploration of jealousy and the very human desire to break through the
boundaries of normal life, built around real-life troubled couple Tom
Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Like Schnitzler’s novella — and, for that
matter, like The Shining — EYES WIDE SHUT is a story told with the logic
of a dream. Those who complained about the film’s unreality missed the
point: everything is just a little bit exaggerated, a little bit more
vivid than usual, just as in a dream.
