KANDAHAR
Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 2001, Iran; 85m
We’re pleased to present this special screening of Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s
KANDAHAR, a fascinating, sobering look at contemporary Afghanistan. The
plot concerns an Afghani woman, long resident in Canada, who returns
home to try to take out her sister who has been living as a refugee in
the city of KANDAHAR, but the real story of the film can be found in
Makhmalbaf’s extraordinary, unforgettable images of the devastated
terrain and lives of the people. Shot inside Afghanistan last year,
KANDAHAR is, in light of the recent tragic circumstances, an important
document of our time.
Columbia University Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and
Literatures Hamid Dabashi will introduce the film as well as his new
book Close-Up: Iranian Cinema Past, Present and Future. Prof. Dabashi
will be on hand to sign copies of his book immediately following the
screening. Many thanks to his publisher, Verso, in helping to arrange
this program.
