VOYAGES
Fri Jan 26: 1:30, 4, 6:15, & 8:30 We're proud to present Emmanuel Finkiel's VOYAGES — audience favorite at last year's New Directors/New Films Festival, winner of the Prix de la Jeunesse at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival and the César for Best First Film. Directed by Emmanuel Finkiel, former assistant to Kieslowski and Godard, the somber and serene VOYAGES tells three intersecting stories about women attempting to reclaim their lost Eastern European Jewish heritage. The first woman, part of a bus tour visiting Jewish cultural and historical sites in Poland, is left behind at a cemetery. The second, living in Paris, receives a call from a man claiming to be the father she believed died in a concentration camp. In the third story, a newly arrived Russian immigrant traverses Tel Aviv on a hot day in search of her distant cousin. Beautifully shot, and featuring a wonderful, largely non-professional cast, VOYAGES blends its three tales into a moving, richly textured, satisfying whole.
"Critical mythology holds that assistant directors seldom make successful transitions to the main chair, but Emmanuel Finkiel is clearly an exception. Finkiel builds his effects with patience and care, mounting to a quietly devastating finale that brings the stories together." - Dave Kehr |
