THE FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER AND GRAND MARNIER ANNOUNCE THE FIFTH ANNUAL GRAND MARNIER FOUNDATION FILM FELLOWSHIP WINNERS

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS director Wes Anderson presented the fellowships to the winners of the fifth annual Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships at the Closing Night ceremonies of the 39th New York Film Festival at Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday, October 14.
The three fellowships, which each carry a cash award of $5000, were won by Sarah Bassine ('00) of Columbia University for her 19-minute short film EIGHT; Edgar Endress from the Syracuse University ('01) for his 13-minute video, THE MEMORY OF THE SNAILS; and Mariana Johnson of New York University ('01) for her critical essay, "Celebration and Elegy: Jean Vigo's ZERO DE CONDUITE."
The three Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships are awarded to graduate film students who demonstrate excellence and originality in the fields of filmmaking, film criticism, and video. The Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships are offered to students nationally.
The film and video winners, EIGHT and THE MEMORY OF THE SNAILS, respectively, will be shown at the Walter Reade Theater during an Independents Night screening in 2002. The winning essay, "Celebration and Elegy: Jean Vigo's ZERO DE CONDUITE" will be published in Film Comment's November/December 2001 issue.
Presenter Wes Anderson had the world premiere of THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS at this year's New York Film Festival. He also directed BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE (NYFF 1998).

Grand Marnier is the sponsor of the New York Film Festival.
Three $5000 Fellowships will be awarded to three graduate-level film students in three categories:
1) one to a film student who shows originality and excellence in the craft of filmmaking;
2) one to an aspiring film historian or film critic;
3) one to an aspiring film student using the medium of video.
To reflect and foster the talent of filmmaking, the Fellowships will be restricted to graduate students enrolled in an education institution in the United States except for California and Texas. The announcement of the Fellowships will coincide with the 39th New York Film Festival which takes place September 28 - October 14, 2001 at Lincoln Center.

RULES

THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE
All entrants must be a resident of a state, other than California and Texas, in the United States and be 21 years of age or older as of February 1, 2001; US citizenship is not required.
Filmmaker, videomaker, or writer must be enrolled as a graduate student in an institution of higher education in the United States, other than California or Texas. Residents of California and Texas are excluded, as are residents of any other jurisdiction where this contest is prohibited. Fellowships are open to students who have graduated in May of the current year.
Submissions are limited to one film, one essay, and one video per applicant. Please complete one application for each separate entry

Deadline for entries to be received is July 16, 2001.

Possible winners will be notified by September 3, 2001 and must along with their guest execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release prior to being named a winner, which will be announced during the New York Film Festival.
Schieffelin & Somerset on behalf of Grand Marnier will pay for and arrange necessary travel for each winner and one (1) guest to be in attendance in New York for the presentation of their awards during the closing night of The New York Film Festival on October 14, 2001. "Necessary travel" shall be determined in the sole discretion of Schieffelin & Somerset. For winners who are residents of New York, New Jersey or Connecticut ("Tri-State Area") travel will be by car service from their homes to Lincoln Center for the closing night of The New York Film Festival on October 14, 2001 and retun to their homes the same evening. For winners from outside of the Tri-State Area, necessary travel will consist of two round-trip coach class airline tickets and a one room, two-night stay in a NYC hotel for each winner (Approximate retail value: $1,800 per winner). Winners and their guests must travel on Saturday, October 13, 2001 and return on Monday, October 15, 2001.

By entering, applicant acknowledges that Schieffelin & Somerset Co., on behalf of an alchol beverage, Grand Marnier, and through its chosen agency, shall have the right to use entrants' names and / or likenesses in any advertising and / or promotion activities related to this competition without compensation or obligation to the entrants.
