The Holy Mountain

Hamlet
Series: The 45th New York Film Festival [Sep 28 - Oct 14 2007]
Director: Sven Gade & Heinz Schall, Country: Germany, Release: 1920, Runtime: 110

Danish screen diva Asta Nielsen was at the height of her popularity when she played the Danish Prince. She and screenwriter Erwin Gepard came up a twist: The Prince had actually been born a Princess, but for reasons of royal succession a change in gender was made, a secret known only to Hamlet’s parents and his nursemaid. Thus all the episodes of the play acquire a different resonance, yet to Nielsen’s and the filmmakers’ credit Shakespeare’s tale retains its power. Long available only in black and white, the film has now been restored to its original polychrome-tinted version by the German Film Institute.
Piano accompaniment by Donald Sosin.
